I utilized my essays to not only set myself apart but also explain parts of my education that needed special explanation such as time off from school and a drop in grades my sophomore year when I was suffering from serious medical issues. In doing so, I was able to provide an explanation holistically without making it seem like I wanted sympathy and demonstrate that I was more than what I'd endured.
