Each October, the color pink begins to show up everywhere around my school: pink clothing, pink football gear, and even pink hair. Pink represents breast cancer awareness and October is the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. When this time of year rolls around, I can't help but feel excited and enthusiastic, for the month ahead will be one of bringing many people together in hope of furthering breast cancer research...
On the already hectic Wednesday night, the Mission Transit manager frantically said, “The payload can only carry one-third of the weight that we thought.” I froze, as if I had not been working hard enough to lower the mass. To get the mass budget in line, major cuts had to be administered, which I had to deal with. The budget was due noon the next day, and it was already one in the morning! My work was not even near done and it seemed like the entire mission was going to crash and burn...

The greatest experiences in life—insofar as I can tell from seventeen years of it—are those that are able to introduce new concepts into the mind, bring new life into the heart, and lead a change in the person as a whole. Law camp was all of that, but I cannot satisfactorily explain, with all its vitality, why it was so special. Alas, I can only attempt and hope that its greatness will bleed through my vastly insufficient words. But in a way, this is good, because it is one of my strongest beliefs that when you really love something or someone, it can only be explained in circular reasoning...
I grew up in South Korea. I never did attend a Korean school because I went to an international school, but I was only taught the language, not the culture, of the U.S. So when I moved back to the US after eight years of living in Korea, I was a bit unacquainted with the American culture. I remember spending hours figuring out what kids were talking about when they spoke colloquially and about singers, TV shows, and movies. And I remember roughly translating a Korean joke to tell my friends, who all responded with confusion instead of laughter. So in the midst of this culture shock, so to speak, I would have disagreed with Dr. Rosen. I would have thought that knowledge, more than culture, is what could fill a life...
Red traffic lights can be unforgiving. Most of us drive through life with a few yellows and reds hindering us, but we can always look forward to going on green. Then there are those stuck at a single red light that never changes color...
Ayn Rand believes that mankind’s greatness is measured not by its collectiveachievements, but by the achievements of the individual. “There is no such thing as a collective thought” (Rand 603), but there are the thoughts of lone men, who create not for the betterment or advancement of society, but for the satisfaction of producing their own work. These men, labeled egotists, are the true benefactors, visionaries, and geniuses...
As a student from the city of Newark, I have become accustomed to diversity in my academic habitat. Most of my peers are either African American or Latino, and there are few who would identify themselves as members of the “majority” outside of my school. I enjoy the cultural diffusion that takes place when in a variegated environment with such a mixed social scene; it is something that does not happen at universities with primarily one or two colors of students. This being the case, quite a large factor in my college search has been finding top-notch schools with a varied student community...
I am a wannabe rock star. Most of my undertakings are stressful, but one activity that I have always found enjoyable is playing Guitar Hero. I received the original Guitar Hero for my twelfth birthday, and have been an avid fan ever since...
My sharp teeth ripped at the chicken’s taut, scaly neck, tearing off chunks as dark blood smeared my otherwise white face. I reached for a napkin, glanced at my friend across the kitchen counter, and noticed the mixed looks of shock and interest on his dark brown face. I was sure he saw a savage ritual of sacrifice, born from what he believed was a culture untouched by the hands of civilization and social grace. It was really just a typical family dinner...
It is incumbent upon all students to recognize that their education feeds into their responsibility toward public service. It is my firm belief that the main purpose behind a student’s pursuit of higher education should not be self-gratification and self-edification, but bettering society or helping people through knowledge, research, and invention...
